What happens is that the brain tissue starts to callous, and it may continue to do so long after the fights. as people get older, they begin to suffer from the symptoms. MMA is definitely a sport with less hits to the head, compared to boxing, but it all depends on what kind of fights, and how many. Goodrigde has been in some wars..A lot of wars actually!
I've been watching his fights a long time, and I've often wondered how the hell he can take all those hits, he's like a mini Mark Hunt or something. I think the K1 matches did the most damage though. But I'm no doctor, just my general impression.

That fight made the Barrie resident a cult hero in a fringe sport — a 260-pound bruiser who mixed martial arts promoters knew would face any fighter anywhere, as long as the cheque cleared.

Gary Goodridge, 45, was an MMA cult hero, fighting 85 times in venues where rules were often loosely enforced. Friends say his speech, memory and co-ordination have deteriorated steadily for several years.
I was just reading about tramatic head injuries in football players. An article on CNN.com, talking about former NFL player Dave Duerson. Within the last year he commited suicide by gunshot to the chest. He left a note asking that his brain be sent to the NFL brain bank for study. They found tremendous damage, seen in patients with severe dementia. After reading that I was deciding whether or not it's worth training more MMA, and possibly fighting at least once. After reading your post, I think BJJ/10thjj is good enough for me.

yes mma can be dangerous but it's nothing compared to football or boxing or kickboxing. A lot of mma fighters are intelligent dudes, even after 10 year careers. Shit coutures been fighting since 97 and he's really well spoken.

Find me an mma fighter in the same situation as goodridge that HASN'T been in 26 kickboxing matches.

mma is definitely not on the same level as boxing or football.

If that is the case, why does Chuck, Mirko and Arlovski get KTFOED everytime wind blows some dust on their chin? Have you seen pro boxers to get knocked out this quickly after fighting at the highest level for 5-7 years?
