Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard at the UFC 125 weigh-ins

On the same day that the UFC announced its new insurance coverage for fighters who are injured during training, two of their top stars went down.

The main event for UFC 130 taking place in just under three weeks is off as both Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard have been forced out of the show with injuries.

The UFC announced the news on a Monday media conference call, verifying an initial report from MMAFighting.com.

According to sources close to the situation, both Edgar and Maynard suffered training injuries with the champion having injured ribs and back and the challenger dealing with a knee injury.

Edgar and Maynard were set to do battle to close out the chapter on their last fight, which ended in a draw after a five round battle.

As of now, the light heavyweight bout between Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Matt Hamill has been bumped up to the main event, while Roy Nelson vs. Frank Mir has been moved to the co-main event on the card.

Neither Edgar or Maynard has made a statement thus far, nor has the promotion regarding when the fight could possibly happen, but it won’t be until at least some point in the summer 2011 at the earliest.

This may also cause a ripple effect for the upcoming lightweight bout between Anthony Pettis and Clay Guida, because with a win Pettis was set to take on the winner of Edgar vs. Maynard, but there’s no telling if this delay will push back his potential title shot as well.

F#@k injuries man. Yes they're part of the sport, but damn I hate em. My training would be so different if I wasn't worried about injuring my ribs again.

I have been talking about this for a while now. As MMA evolves the fighters are getting better at hurting each other with better technique, more weight cut, more strength and speed packed on a tight frame. In order to combat this, athletes increase the dose of their training a bit more every day. Now an average MMA fighter trains harder than an MMA champion 10 years ago. MMA may be too hard on human body's to become a sport like boxing or basketball. In boxing there are no kicks, wrestling or submissions hence the lower body of the fighter stays intact, head is protected with 14 oz gloves, which slow down opponents arm and take away a lot of pressure from the punch. Basketball, as athletes get faster and more technical, they just score more and better matches occur for the fans. In MMA since there is so little protection from punches, kicks and knees are allowed which are thrown with no padding whatsoever, wrestling is a major part of the game, joints get manipulated daily in BJJ training, virtually from the tip of the head of a fighter to his toe nail, every joint, muscle, bone and organ of an MMA fighter is at risk on a daily basis, hence the ridiculous amounts of hardcore injurys. A friend of mine blew his elbow and tore his triceps clean off the bone a week prior a fight recently. This is one very important reason why I never had any interest in personally competing in MMA.
