So I train at Carlson Gracie miami under Michael "buiu" Porfirio, He's a great teacher and person. Everyone there is super nice and Ive only heard one or two comments about 10thp ( none of which from him). There isnt an overwhelming sense of hate towards the system. My dilemma comes from the fact that they actively compete and Its my Goal to compete but I will be competing under the 10thplanet flag along side my HotBox brothers not team C.Gracie, which is my main gym if im not with the hotbox.

How do I approach the topic that when we compete Ill be on a opposing team without being disrespectful ?

Straight up- talk to them. let them know that you want to compete and that you would like to do it without disrespecting them. Ask what would make them comfortable and go from there.
I would just try and mention that you want to help support a small group of friends who train a little differently than those at your current (CG) gym.

personally, since I mostly stick with nogi, ive had students of mine ask about training other places with the gi. Any good instructor/training partner will tell you to go out and find out what works best for you. I WANT my students to challenge themselves by trying new things. its a matter of personal preference.

when I've been asked by my students what to do in a situation like yours, I, first-off, THANK them for having the respect to talk to me. THAT takes guts. Then from there, I try to help them anyway that I can to make sure they are doing what is best for them.
dont get me wrong, it is a bummer when a student asks that. its even a bigger bummer when someone moves to a different gym, and is now competing against you. But like i said, any good instructor will only encourage a student to get out there and try new things. I know I am doing a good job when they try new things and come BACK.

Interesting question and it's both possible and probable that there are others in the same situation as you. There could be the one or two guys in your main gym who give you flack for flying the 10th Planet Flag at a tourney, but that's nothing new. I mean all you can do is be honest and say how much you love NoGi jiu jitsu and that you love 10th Planet for it. At that point if someone is mean to you or not, you were honest and up front, which is respectable behavior. I don't guarantee respectable behavior in return though. You can only control your own actions, not others. I'm have faith that if Coach Porfirio is as cool as you say, that he won't throw rocks at you during the tournament while you roll during your matches =D.

Well sir. I compete in my 10th Planet Rashguard tapping people with rubberguard and swim moves but register under my gyms name so we get team medals. Once people from our "hotbox if you will" registered under my gyms name as well to help with the medal count. That could be a possibility. If you train somewhere and go to the same tournament I would definitely see it as weird not to rep them.

Well I intend on wearing my fight shorts which have their logo on it ( getting a 10th patch soon) so I will be showing respect to them since I train their and really respect the time they've given me and what not.

Who gives you the biggest challenge?
Bring them to your gym on an open mat night. It helps both of your games. They really should join your gym as well and ya'll keep burnin with the windows up on the side. But, if they go to open mat and gel their should be no issue. If you respect both sides you should merge and not separate. Is your instructor anti 10p?

I train at C.Gracie more but I suspect thats gonna change now that Brandons down here. I get more challenge from the gracie but simply because there are more people to roll with. The other members of the hot box that I train with regularly train at a MMA gym and we usually do open mat together at that gym. I joined the gracie school because of my work schedule, they allowed me to be able to train mon - sat mornings. because my schedule differs from all the hot box members we are divided there.\

oh and Master Buiu is not Anti-10p he incourages us to go do free trails at other schools, he says itll let us know we want to be there even more.
