Georges St-Pierre Early Favorite in Possible Champ vs. Champ Bout with Nick Diaz

    By Mike Chiappetta
    MMA Writer mmafighting

Georges St-Pierre's next fight has not yet been decided. The UFC welterweight champion could either move up in weight to fight middleweight champion Anderson Silva, or he may stay put and face Strikeforce's 170-pound champ Nick Diaz.

It's a fight Diaz wants badly, and last Thursday, he was in Las Vegas to meet with UFC president Dana White and ask for it. The results of that meeting are so far unknown, but we can report there is no deal done just yet. But we also know that White is often quite receptive to fighters who passionately lobby for a specific fight.

Though the bout is not official, many believe it's a more likely possibility than St-Pierre vs. Silva, and in the earliest odds released for the bout, St-Pierre has been installed as a fairly large favorite.

MMA oddsmaker Nick Kalikas has installed St-Pierre is a -425 favorite over Diaz, making him an over 4-to-1 choice to win. Diaz is at +325.

St-Pierre (22-2) is the winner of nine straight bouts and has defended his belt six times in a row since re-capturing it with a win over Matt Serra in April 2008. Just three weeks ago, he held off Diaz's Cesar Gracie teammate Jake Shields via unanimous decision.

Diaz, though, has an even longer win streak than GSP, boasting 10 straight victories, including his most recent, an April 9 knockout of Paul Daley that moved his record to 25-7 with 1 no contest. Given Diaz's boxing ability and attacking jiu-jitsu style, many feel his skill set can offer St-Pierre more matchup problems than any top-ranked welterweight.

The prospect of a Silva vs. St-Pierre superfight still remains a possibility, but St-Pierre would find himself in the role of underdog there. As it currently stands, Silva is a -175 favorite. The middleweight champ has other things to think about first, however. He is currently booked for a UFC 134 title defense against Yushin Okami.

I can't wait to see how George reacts to Nick talking shit and beating his ass at the same time. I see a new UFC WW champ in the near future.

I'am not so sure. GSP probably will spend most rounds taking Diaz down, easily controlling where the fight takes place.

Jake shields is one of the best jiu jitsu guys on the ufc and he didn't even try to submit GSP, opting for the knockout punch. I really don't see Nick being able to submit GSP.

Still i would love to see the fight.

I think nick will be able to lay a few hands on gsp... The fight with shields barely hit the ground whereas we saw with the diego sanchez bout even when outclassed on the ground nick dosen't just lay still... I can see this being the fight of the year a new champ and a healthy bank account for me

This will be the first fight I put some money on. 4-1 odds... I'm taking 209 all day. George is very smart and knows how to win. He knows he has to put Nick on his back. To do that he will have to get by Nick's preassure and barrage of punches. GSP has never been preassured the way Nick will preassure him. He's not comfortable in a fight. Also, if George puts Nick on his back, we could start hearing boos from the crowd. Nick is very active from guard and it's not in GSPs best interest to do more than just lay on him. At some point people are going to get tired of GSP and I think this is the fight. GSP bruises too easily and GSP is going to look bad after this fight. If Diaz doesn't get a late KO or TKO, I see the judges giving him the win anyway. Don't forget, these are boxing judges. I see this like Pernell Whitaker vs Felix Trinidad. Whitaker won the fight but Trinidad got the decision.
