well its not completely necessary to train at a 10th planet gym to support the system... the black belt guy looks alright from the info available. as long as he doesnt look down on 10th planet or anything like that, there isnt really a problem...

well when i talked to him he said the best bjj guys train both gi and no gi but thats all

Don't focus on belt colours to much IMO. It thats what your focusing on you will also rate your own developement and evolution based on what belt you are.

Yeah it's great to grade and have whatever it is around your waist, but the biggest thing for me is the 'connection' you get from the instructor and the school.

Keep your focus on improving your own game and your own development. Belt colours shouldn't really come into it.

I give up. Some of you guys are funny. I look at 10P like a big family and we should support one another. We are our own lifeline and should be like a brotherhood. Yet some of you guys are guiding him wrongly in my opinion. Its kinda like being in the market for a car and you have a brother that sells the car you want but you want to buy from someone else because they won the top salesperson award. No way I would ever give business to someone else then to my own family and I think of this scenario the same way. I would support my brother and his school. And Im not trying to bully anyone, its called loyalty

You can't force people to join your family or brotherhood, he must decide that for himself after weighing his options. He can go try out the schools and let the product speak for itself. I belive that 10th Planet is the superior product but it's not for everyone, some people want the gi too.

I totally understand picking a bjj black belt as an instructor over a tpjj purple, that happens alot.

If it's pure no-gi you want I would suggest the tpjj purple without a doubt.

But if it's a mixture of gi and no-gi that you want and the bjj black belt has at least 2 nogi classes a week, then maybe the bjj black is a better fit for you.

But if the bjj black belt is not open minded to the rg, twister, and lockdown half then for sure run from him. Closed minded black belt instructors are sometimes worse than white belt instructors

Have you talked to both instructors? What are your jiu jitsu goals? Maybe if you know what you're looking for then it will help make your decision easier? For example, if you want to be an mma fighter and/or compete strictly nogi, 10thP is probably the best place for you. If you want to compete in the both gi and nogi then maybe you go to the other guy and cross train with 10th P

Thank you Eddie and everyone else for the advice I guess the decision is ultimately up to me. I'm gonna have some time to make a decision as my wrist is broken I'm getting my cast off next week hopefully I'll be back in training soon but without a doubt I am a big 10th planet supporter I love the system. Hey, Emir - Being a member of 10th Planet Hartford I holy heartly believe you should be training with us . Eddie and a few other have given great advice that all points to the fact that picking the right school has as much to do with what you want out of your training as it does with how "qualified" the instructor is. In my opinion a big part of a fruitful coach/student relationship is whether or not you feel like you can connect with the coach. I've tried out a few schools and just didn't feel the coach, I totally respected their Jitz but felt like something was missing. When I found John Roderick I honestly hadn't ever really heard of 10th Planet, I stayed with John not only because I loved the system and techniques but because John helped me realize my own potential. That ability to connect and impact people to bring out their best isn't something a belt can quantify . Give them both a month trial period. See which school will bring out your best, that's the one for you .

ok real talk. your on a fucking tenth planet forum. what the hell do you think people are gonna say? go to a strictly gi forum and watch most of the people say the complete opposite of what they're saying here.

but thats not all. I have a theory. I think the reason you are posting your question here is because subconsciously I think you want to be told that 10th planet is the better place to train. So maybe you have your answer already.

i have homework for my student who just join- before they can sign a contract with the gym i teach at, i make them go to at least one other JJ school in the area. preferably all of them.

any good instructor wont make it about them. its all about the student, what he wants, what he CAN do, and what he will do.
im confident enough in my abilities that i can only say that only about 5% has ever left, and never came back. I'm pretty happy with that number. They may have found something at the other gym that made them happier!

go to both, try a class or two at each, then decide
