Planning on fighting in MMA and could use some advice....

all right here is the situation. I am 23 and have been training in jiu jitsu solid for almost a year. In the past couple of months I began working on wrestling and my stand up game as well. I originally never intended to do mma as I really only worked on my jiu jitsu, but my training partners have told me that my stand up is a lot better than I think it is and that my grappling is pretty solid. With that said I know I am not quite ready yet. Hell, I dont really even know how I would go about breaking into the ammy mma scene in dallas. I Figure maybe 6 months to a year more of training and I should be good to go

So.. anyone else here with any genuine mma experience please give me your advice! How does 10th planet play a roll in your mma fights? what works best? how did you get broken into the scene? Any help from anyone here would be appreciated as I am not blowing smoke here I am dead serious about fighting mma and repping 10th planet and this will happen one way or another! Thanks guys!

P.S for the record I have entered in grappling tournaments and used to compete in tkd tournaments when I was a kid so I have some experience when it comes to this sort of thing...

My gym's owner/coach has personal relationships with the local promoters. We just get phone calls asking us if we want to fight or have a cage grapple match.

If you don't have someone acting on your behalf just track down a local promoter and give him a call. From what the local promoters around here tell me, anything below 145lbs is difficult to book since there are less smaller or in shape guys. So if you are smaller you might have to fight up a few weight classes at first.

My suggestion is to do more Jiu jitsu Tourneys, if you are killing in them then go up in level to intermediate or advanced, and Muay Thai Smokers. TKD tournys are about points and speed not power, you can't kick to the legs or punch to the face in them. You'll get to deal with 100% aggression on the ground and on the feet. That's my $.02. Think of it like this, Sean Bollinger and Denny are Black Belts and are both AMMY, IMO, one should be at purple belt level in Jitz or at least a HIGH level blue with amazing wrestling before fighting as well as having had people really trying to punch and kick you in the face (Muay Thai Smokers)

My ammy record is 14-7 so I have some real experience and as far as 10th Planet JJ in the cage it works extremly well. That is Master Eddies whole goal, to make jiu jitsu more effective in mma. If you get taken down to your back at the very minimum mission control stops the top man from being able to deliver damage. For sure work all aspects of mma before you get in the cage but while in the cage focus on your strengths and dont try to do a bunch of shit you have never drilled before. Basics win. You could prolly just google any mma events in your area and get a phone number of a promoter. but you prolly also know some people who know a promoter. train hard and good luck.

hey nathan, how does the lock down half guard work out for you in the cage? I pull sweeps and submissions from that spot all day long in jiu jitsu and I am wondering how it fairs when strikes are involved

the lockdown rules. the biggest problem i see with ammy fighters is when they get in a "bad position" like full mount or even half gaurd (it seems to me people who dont know the lockdown consider half gaurd a bad spot to be when i aboslutely love being there cause there are so many options) they try to block punches instead of controlling posture. so if you get half gaurd/lockdown be very diligent to control posture and hit the old school sweep. its there almost every time. the biggest thing is to not stop moving. master all the options from half gaurd and it will take you anywhere you want to go.

My advice is BE IN SHAPE. Cardio! Get as much sparring in so it's not a foreign feeling and you don't gas out with adrenaline as much. 10th planet jj is perfect for mma. I've seen a good bit of ammy fights and everyone that ends up in guard leave hands on the mat. I'd say if you feel confident in your submission abilities then go for it. It's only three 3 minute rounds so if your in shape then worst case scenario is you loose a close decision. Just make sure your not getting fed to a monster. Here's my first fight, as you see 10planet jj helps a ton.

Even having a basic grasp of the tenth planet system will give you an edge on most amatuer shows.

Turn up to the shows try to talk to the promoters and pick the show that gives a nice ticket deal or at the least pays expenses, is well run but is not terribly high level.
