Belt promotions come with a complimentary oil check at my gym.
I actually thought that was a pretty cool rite of passage. I don't think people should be forced to do it if they don't want to, but realistically nothing bad is going to happen to you from getting choked out and having the choke immediately released. The only way damage could happen is if the choke is held continuously after the person has passed out.
MEDICALLY i would like to learn into what happens when you choke people out long term / short term effects but currently with my on preference i actually LIKE this type of ceremony because #1 it helps with neck strength (building it tougher to last longer in chokes) #2 you know time-wise how long til you pass out #3 like i saw in the paul saulen (too lazy to get real name) guy said "its the LAST TIME you get choked as your respectable belt rank...its a mental thing
I think everyone should experience being choked out. That way you know when your truly in danger and don't tap too early in competition.
Yeah you don't know until you actually have someone choking you out exactly how far you can go. I've never been choked out but I've tapped and stood up to fall over again on some other lightheaded trip. I don't think it's necessary but with anything in life... If you don't like it, tap. Usually it's not depriving the brain of oxygen, it's usually you depriving it of blood that shuts it off.
This has a dramatically less chance of causing damage than if you lose oxygen to your brain.
Remember that there are people with low blood pressure that faint cause of it.
It's not something the body is totally opposed to but that's why they made tapping.
