I presumed that he was, but that he was just spouting off typical BJJ message board arguments. However, I think it's a valid question that's actually interesting when asked correctly. Just how in vogue was Nino's game during the Eddie's time at the Machados?
There are clearly similarities between all omoplatas and more specifically between the posture raping omoplatas that Nino throws up. They clearly are a thing of beauty and I actually hit a wrist control omoplata with my 5 year old girl hands the other day.
But in this case, the differences are more important than the similarities. If you presume that Eddie's game is just Nino's game then logically you would just use Nino's game. Since from that logic Eddie is just a derivative copycat. BUT, if you appreciate the differences between their styles, you realize that Nino's omoplata setups and Eddie's omoplata setups are actually different ranges of attack for the same movement. One is a deep tight trapped arm.. the other is a more open wrist control.
That's actually how I caught the wrist control omoplata... I had the overhook, switched to rubber guard, to omoplata, my opponent came back at me, I shot for a shitty triangle, he turned back out and his arm slipped out... saved it with wrist control, kicked the foot in front.. omoplata. Nino, Eddie, Roger, Marcelo, Lebell, Robinson, Fugi... I love it all.
