    Jiu-Jutsu advice for big guys

I've only been training for about a month or so and am running into some minor problems due to my size. What submissions work best for big guys? I'd like to get a few more in my arsenal that I can work on.

Here is what I have been working on:

    From guard:
    Kimura
triangle (i can't lock it in but i can get in the right position. i think this is a flexibility issue.)

    From top:
    Americana
    Arm triangle

Twister side control and all of the options from there work good for bigger guys. If you can get to the truck there's several options too. How big are you if you don't mind me asking?

All submissions, just put in the reps and work on your flexibility. You've only been training a month, give it time. I'm 225 and I play rubber guard. I'm still working on flexibility, always working at being more flexible. Big Amir is like 260 and he's more flexible than me.

There are certainly big guy moves, but I'd encourage you not to try to catagorize the moves until you've tried them. Everyone develops their own game over time and your game will be the result of what you are taught, what you like, and what works for your body type.

Try everything and then decide what to incorporate into your game.

Without knowing you, I'm guessing that you are probably stronger than most guys you roll with, but not as quick. If this is the case, you'll want to work on controlling your opponent. Use your weight to your advantage and right away learn about hip control. I think Cookie Monster posted a link on this site on hip control that was great. Learn how to control your opponent using your weight and lots of opportunities will open up.

Try not to fall into a trap that I see big guys fall into. Because you are probably stronger and bigger than other guys, you will probably be able to force submissions like the Americanas just by using superior strength and size. That is fine, but try not to make it your bread and butter, because if you are just forcing things with strength, you'll be screwed when you face guys in competition that are your size. Look for opportunities that your opponents give you as opposed to forcing the action using superior strength.

I'm 6'1 and 260lbs and I play rubber guard. Most of the issues you may be having with any subs or positions can be fixed with some flexability and a few tweaks made to the technique itself. You may need to try and tighten up your thighs a bit if you are having problems with your triangle. I gained some weight a year back on my thighs and it made it harder to lock the triangle in. Some squats with low weight and high reps took an inch or two off of them and made my triangle game alot tighter.

i have really big thighs, but they are solid muscle (i carry my fat in my face and belly). What stretches do you recommend to help me with that triangle?

as a big guy around those same dimensions, i suggest once you get good at the kimura, americana, and then arm triangle, i would stray away from focusing on attempting those submissions at all just to get good at the other stuff...especially from the guard like triangles and the myriad of other techniques. a particular time when i was ending up on the top i found myself tapping people out with those moves and not even working on guard, defenses, other submissions etc and using those as my goto subs instead of making sure i could get good at the rest. just my 2 cents.

When I first started jitz it was after 7 years of folk/greco/freestyle wrestling. For the first year All I did was wrestle for top position and force a Americana or a kimura. It took awhile for me to adapt.
