Gina Carano's return to fighting isn't the only thing that's been delayed. Her movie Haywire just changed distributors again and with it's new owners comes a new date as well.
Steven Soderbergh's upcoming action-thriller starring MMA fighter Gina Carano has a new home at Relativity Media and will be dropping in theaters January 20th, 2012. The film features a ridiculous cast alongside Carano of Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton, Michael Douglas and Michael Angarano. This is not dissimilar to Soderbergh's upcoming outbreak-thriller Contagion which stars Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Bryan Cranston, John Hawkes and Demetri Martin. You gotta hand it to Soderbergh for at least having a great casting director.
It doesn't hurt that Soderbergh is claiming he's going to be wrapping up his filmmaking career after making a Liberace movie starring Michael Douglas (complete with Matt Damon french kissing, joy of joys) and another spy film with George Clooney. Ten bucks says he pulls an Anderson Silva and backtracks or at worst his retirement lasts about as long as Randy Couture's first shot at it.
As for Gina's movie, we were already making jokes about distributors passing the film around like a Thai hooker, and that was before Lionsgate went from threatening to sue us over leaked poster art to dumping the film on Relativity in under a month. Delays will also tell you something about the quality of a film. An action film getting moved to the summer is good. To winter ... that's where bad films go to die. Since the movie went from an April 2011 release date to Summer 2011 to January 2012, what does that say? Do the moves even out? Or is it less third times the charm and more three strikes you're out?
