Leg Lock Position Names, what are they?

The names I've been hearing are unclear and not well defined.

Reilly Bodycomb simplifies the positions with numbers. 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4. But I've also have heard them labelled as highside outside, highside inside, low side outside, and lowside inside.

For the most part, when I read Russian translations of SAMBO positions... they are descriptions of the move or position and are usually 3-6 words long.

Anybody know any consistent short terminologies for all the leg lock positions and submissions?

Going from Achilles to The knot.
Scissors to ankle lace and reverse heel hook.
And 50/50

I would like to help but you need to be more specific. i.e Achilles to The knot? Attacking the achilles is a type of ankle lock. The leg knot is a position of control which you could do an achilles lock from.

The is no set terminology in Sambo, they vary from School to School. Reilly and I have dicussed it before, we have both used a numbered system. I moved away from the numbered system and have gone to actually names.

The names we use are broken down into 4 catagories:

The Position
The Submission
The Transition
Specific Transition to a Specfic Submission

The names for the basic positions I use at my school:

The Clamp
The Wedge
The Knot
The Splits
50/50
The Outside Wedge
Russian Cowboy (Reverse Mount)

Some of the Transition names we use:

The Swivel: (Basic attack from the knees, while in the guard)
The Spiral: (Basic attack from standing, while in the guard)
The Reaper: (Attacking by reaping the knee from bottom, I can be done for a number of positions: Butterfly Guard, X-guard, when mounted, from the X-blast, etc.)

Names for specific tranistions and submissions like the Grinder (knee/calf crush counter from a straight ankle lock),Wraps (Turkey Wrap, Capoeira wrap,etc. which are similiar to a crush, but you the attack is rotated 90 degrees and you don't squeeze you stretch your leg). The list is long.

Achilles is a point of control aswell as a submission, I use it and have seen it taught as your #1 grip to initiate the "clamp" although some ppl simply control the knee with their hand which I do too.

X-blast? Is that x-guard with an Achilles grip?

Ankle under the armpit and wizerd instead of loading the leg above your shoulder and holding the knee like traditional X?

I have no idea what your wraps are, I am familiar with the counter to The str8 ankle lock one.

Would these wraps happen to be a calf crush from jailbreak, butterfly, xguard, approaching someones butterfly guard, or countering somebody escaping your heel hook?

I think what Scott is trying to say is " you don't attempt the submission before the securing the position of control". This is exactly why its nice to have common terminology, what your refering to as an "Achilles " we simply refer to as an "Overhook". And no you will not find me teaching it that way to "the Clamp".

Exactly, I guess that's what I'm looking for :-P a way to communicate leg lock positions, transitions and submissions.

What's the fall back of using the overhook in the clamp position opposed to griping the knee? Wouldn't you possibly lose the half crab counter?

Does anybody have a name for this thing?



My coach taught it to us a while ago and now I'm hitting this frequently during live rolling. The title of the video clip really isn't specific enough to differentiate it from other flying scissor attacks as this one can enter you into the 50/50.
