Ever wonder, "What the hell is Horwich talking about?"

He's not even close to crazy, he's a borderline fucking genius. He understands ALL this shit. I understand most of the concepts, but not much of the physics and almost none of the math. But yea, this is what Horwich is talking about all the time, or at least a big part of it.

Oh just to clarify, I don't pretend to know Matt personally, but the things he says sound VERY familiar, and if you watch this vid, it'll sound familiar to you too.

I think I can safely say that nobody understands quantum mechanics. - Richard Feynman

Where did Matt study QM or is he just a big reader?

Definitely, but Matt's applications of QM are more philosophical and romantic in nature. The connective way that the universe works technically has no functional bearing between individuals or day to day things. At least if it does, it hasn't been proven yet. Regardless of that though, just the understanding of that overall connectivity is a humbling realization within itself that can inspire ideas and people. Deepak Chopra espouses a similar viewpoint though some would argue that Deepak has just relabeled Buddhism with psuedo science terminology.

The universe created itself from nothing, because it is the nature of nothing for something to occur. Once Earth is gone, new life in other areas of space won't be able to detect other stars due to universal expansion and the speed of light. We are alive and technologically advanced at a very unique moment in time.

edit* Idk why Matt feels the need to bring String Theory into things. Muddles what he is saying, imo.

I sure can try, but I'll probably screw it up. Basically, this is a lecture from one of the leading physicists. First, he talks about Einstein's theory of relativity, and gets into how it pertains to the universe's expansion. He gets into how we can now measure the rate of expansion of the universe, the age of the universe, and even the weight of the universe. Then, he gets into how "nothing" weighs something, and he says it's ridiculous, but true. You can see virtual particles in empty space popping into and out of existence, and it's possible to weigh these particles. Then he ties it together with measuring the curvature of the universe, and come to the conclusion that we live in a "flat" universe (I don't understand exactly how he did that, but it seemed to kinda make sense). Anyway, he talks about how dark matter can create a universe out of nothing, and if given an infinite amount of time, is actually inevitable, proving the big bang true. Finally, he gets into why we live in the time we do, and how it's the only time we could possibly live.

At the end, he answers questions which are VERY interesting, and if nothing else, I recommend you watch the Q&A.

Hope I didn't screw that up too much, lol it's probably a butchery of what he actually said.

Idk, string theory isn't necessarily untrue, and maybe we just can't completely understand it yet, so bringing it up is for philosophical reasons... I think?
