False. It's situtation dependent. It's been shown exhaustively that the average adult with knife in hand can close a distance of 21 feet and deal a potentially fatal blow in under a second and a half. That's faster than just about anyone can draw from retention and get a shot off (and even then, first shot stoppages are relatively rare in handgun shootings). Adjust for the fact that most knife attacks happen at
much closer distance than that, and that the first time most stabbing victims see the knife is after they've been stabbed at least one time, and it's pretty clear that at close distance unless you have the drop on guy your .357 mag might not do you any good.
