I can't say Carlin is the only #1 cuz I feel like Richard Pryor was his equal although they reached a different demographic. It was like they were the same comic, but in different skin colors. To me, they are both equally the GOAT.
But even still, if I could narrow it down, my personal favorite still remains Mitch Hedberg. He was incredibly unique, distinct, and obscure. But I'm drawn to dry humor, so yeah. My girl hates him.

IMO, Dave Chappelle is this generation's Richard Pryor. I wish he was back on the air with anything. Stand up. Sketch comedy. Dude is hilarious.
Daniel Tosh is on his way up too. I love his structure and delivery. Tons of misdirection. Heaps of sarcasm. Crowd participation. His stage presence/character is great. If you have netflix, check his stand up.
