I always feel like Im bragging with this story, well yeah I guess I am, anyway, The way I popped my gi cherry was in a tournament. I borrowed my friends gi and blue and won, then the second time I won the blue at naga. This is how I got my blue. Now I regularly train gi.
Now this is something I never thought I would say. Training gi helped my nogi. Only under the condition that I only use my nogi techs. Feels like I can just peel right through transitions when the gi comes off, making me more fluid and explosive from having done the tech under resistance. Make sense?
I thought I would where a gi the first time from wanting more grapple matches at tournaments.
Heres what I noticed so far. Its hard to do some techniques when they have a gi on. Darces are annoying because of the extra inch or 2 the gi causes you have to go. Had to keep switching to Japanese Necktie.
Truthfully, Im not sure If I can Handle more than 2 monthes there with only fridays being the no-gi days. for now its awesome. Im getting good fundamental bjj stuff my first gi coach never showed me because he hated me, since I whore a mma school shirt(I got for free) instead of his to a Naga years ago. I didnt ever even use his techniques. I just liked grappling with a black belt. He never said why he was mad. He just wouldnt say hello or grapple with me anymore. Plus they didnt want anybody cross-training with other schools like a cult or something. Huge gym red flag for me. I had to dip outta there. Had to find out what his problem was from someone else a year later.
