Ron Paul on the Civil Rights Act of 1964
to paraphrase;
the CRA trampled the rights of property owners and increased tensions rather than diffused them. Property rights are one of the major rights protected by the constitution. Business owners should be allowed to serve or not serve anyone they want to for whatever reason they want. They should not be forced into commerce with anyone and the CRA forced business owners to do just that. Ron Paul believed that over time, relations between whites and minorities would have improved and if some business owner had a "blacks only" or "whites only" sign at his business today, he wouldnt be in business long because no one would shop there.
Keep in mind governments made segregation laws and laws oppressive to women and minorities that had to be repealed. Instead of simply repealing the laws, the government went in the entire opposite direction. Ron believes that the government should have made none of these such laws to begin with and let the markets and society dictate, not governments and bureaucracies.
