    Japanese Necktie

    Choke or Crank?

I got little t-Rex arms. Been hitting it and ppl tap cause it scares them from neck contortion.... sometimes their neck pops. Am I doing it right? I don't want to break anybodies neck.

I usually dive with it and make it as quick as possible. Better for slow timely setup or grip it and rip it?

It's a choke and a crank. If it works for you, I don't see a problem. You SHOULD be able to do it slow, going too fast can sometimes lead to mistakes

I agree with J Chow. To avoid complaints and problems I usually do it slow. Well, the setup, the transition, and the diving over the shoulder I do fast but after that I slowly begin to add hip pressure and torque until they tap. It can be an unfamiliar position for some people causing them to tap later than usual. Doing neck cranks fast can sometimes lead to "fuck you" glares while they stretch and play with their neck long after the tap.

We rep the shit out of it slow and speed it up but never to quick like AJ said from the nasty crank.

I was drilling the move with a buddy of mine and we discovered the same problem. I've only learned the move from MTS, but he seemed to hit the choke just fine, mine was always coming out as a neck crank first, even drilling it very slow. It seems to first be a very unorthodox feeling for a submission by the positioning of the arms, and it also seems to be a move that requires a lot of getting the feeling for. Certain subs you get right away, but for us, it seems to have a learning curve in terms of hitting it perfect. We also haven't had the luck to have it be taught in person either, which would help.

Make sure you have the vice perfectly perpendicular to your partner's neck, and keep your elbows tight together. Those two details should help with establishing the choke over the neck crank.
