I worked an 8-4:30 for a while but still managed to make it to the evening classes. If you have no kids, and the class is viable to get to, there's no excuse

Nah man I'm kinda in the same boat. I work part-time go to school full-time then try to get to the gym to train and it's hard as fuck. Personally I feel like I have no socal life between trying to juggle the 3. It's all about finding time to do it which is hard; you can give up going out with friends on certain days or give up some sleep to make it to training at least that's what I do a lot anymore and it sucks. I wake up feeling like I age way to fast. It all comes to making sacrafices if it's possible to do so.

In regards to having children, sometimes the things that define us as individuals define our children more than what we try to teach them. It's important to live as complete person in the presence of your kids as a model of what you expect from them. It might sound selfish but sometimes hanging out with your kids all of the time isn't the best developmental choice (it's fun though).

The social life thing is kind of silly because you don't really give up a social life. Your training partners become your new friends. You're only really giving up drinking with your college buddies and that isn't such a loss. I work a full time job, go to school, have a wife and 4 kids, and make it to quite a few days of training every week. I was going 4-5 days a week in Omaha. The other thing is that I know of people that have waaaaay harder schedules than I have and they make it to train. They bring their kids and let them do homework on the way to the dojo or at the dojo. Pack meals to free up time... you gotta decide what level of commitment you are going to make and then make it.

I agree not going out and drinking isn't such a loss and people from the gym do become your friends, but it doesn't necessarily mean I hangout with them. Nobody from the gym I go to live within 40 minutes of me and have the wife and kids situation not something I can relate to so we don't hangout except occasionally after fights. Working weekend nights and school all day then training does mean lack of a social life considering I live in a small town and people only do things on certain days. This being said it all depends on how a persons schedule interacts with the gyms training schedule. There is also prearranged planning going into a person being able to go the gym and train that being a significant other watching the kids or a baby sitter. 3rd shift people unless they belong a a large commercialized gym have a hard time training a full session same with 2nd shift when only night classes are offered. I agree with Ryan its all about commitment and if you are fighting you better make sure your commitment is there or you are risking injury by not being prepared.

Over the years my attendance has waxed and waned with military duty, injuries and illness, work stuff, grad school... it's a wonder I made it to class at all sometimes. I just figured I'd make whatever little time I could and when I could make more, I'd go more. I figured even if it's just one hour this week that's one more hour logged on the mats. Then I can try for two next week. Sometimes the schedule would open up and I'd make five classes in a week. The lack of consistency has hurt me a little but you can work through it. I've been doing a lot of mental practice lately since I'm out with surgery. I can still do cardio but I can't lift or crunch at all. So while I'm doing my cardio I've been doing mental reps of the basic path, twister path, and the russian cowboy and capoiera cowboy stuff I last worked. I'm hoping that the mental practice in combination with the cardio will mean once my lifting restriction is off I can hit the ground running on the mats. Keep workin' brother! Things will come together.

For me, it isn't the time that prevents me from training as much as I'd like, it's the money. All of the decent gyms down here in south florida are ATT gyms and thus cost $150 a month. I'm a full time law student, in debt, and my loan money goes to tuition, books, rent, bills, food, and gas. $150 a month for a gym membership just doesn't fit into the budget right now. But you better believe that when I'm a practicing lawyer and making bank I will gladly pay whatever I have to to get the best training available. Any such thing as MMA training on layaway? Hah!
