Also known As Hard Step. Drum and Bass was big in the UK late 80's and early 90's underground scene. This spun off into Fantasia and Resurrection North of England. 10,000 people just turning up at some Farm in Cheshire with a P.A and raving all night long blasted on E.

The problem with Drum and Bass was it revolved around a single break called the Amen Brother, people used lots of techniques to change the sound but it remained. Groove Rider. DJ SS, Roni Size and Goldie being a pioneer that had the most success along with LTJ Bukem being a super star in Japan. The best artist never made it to mainstream and the music industry could not regulate D&B. Clubs would not play it, calling it "Woog Music"

Dubstep now is just high BPM with simulated FM and 808 synthesizers sounds arranged in no real order. Its actual a step backwards in terms of composition.

For the purposes of this conversation a good example would be UK Apache & Shy FX.

Thanks for the link. It's helpful but I think I'm more confused now. Those sub categories are based on aesthetic, which is bizarre because a single band can cover different aesthetics. Aphex Twin alone could exist in most of those listed categories. Genre discussions are always difficult though. You never know if somebody is speaking in terms of aesthetic differences or in terms of historical timelines and cultural significance. This list tries to do both so it's rough to follow.

I recently got into Detroit Techno (listed as CLASSIC on the chart) so this chart is really interesting in terms of seeing how each style plays off of each other.
