ok, I take it this is a work-owned laptop? If so I would have your IT contact at work look at it if possible. There aren't many things you can do to fix this without admin rights. Everything you are saying points to a driver issue or something addressed by a hotfix, but none of that can be accomplished if you do not have rights to install drivers/software.

my soundcard went out on my dell not too long ago. tried EVERYTHING. hope thats not the case bro...
same exact scenario, put it to standby, woke it up and nada. :/

I think something came loose because I had a video playing and moved the screen forward like I was closing it and the sound came back.... The speakers are along the sides of the screen.

Yeah, it's bad design to rig so many cables into the monitor flap.
It's quite possible that something got snagged or just eventually
has been worked out of place or off the solder.

Try some headphones next time you're at work, at least then
you'll know if it's the card/drivers, or the speaker connection.

Try This

In Conrol Panel -> System -> Select the Device Manager and find the Sound entry. Expand it. Click the entry for High Definiton Audio Device with the right mouse button. Uninstall it and the software too (check the box).

Now put the PC to sleep. When it restarts it will reinstall the Audio device.
