Yeah, as a boxing fan I'm well in tune with both of their personalities, both with each other and in the media. Floyd, Sr. is the one who consistently tries to take credit for where Floyd, Jr. ended up as a boxer: the top of the heap. While he did mold him, teach him how to box, etc. Floyd was brought through the professional ranks mostly by his uncle.
If I'm not mistaken, after Floyd, Sr. got out of jail (when his son was 21) he resumed control of his professional career as his trainer, but that quickly ended in 2000, and Mayweather chose to go with his uncle. The two have had a tumultuous relationship for years, recently they seemed to have mended things but clearly the underlying thoughts of both men still present problems.
Floyd has become the best boxer in the world through BOTH the upbringing he had from his father and the knowledge he received, as well as the training that his uncle has put him through since he became a professional.
