NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico, Sept. 15 (UPI.com) -- The mangled bodies of two bloggers were hanged from a bridge in Mexico as a warning against denouncing drug cartel activities online, Mexican officials said.
Investigator Ricardo Mancillas Castillo, with the public prosecutor's office, said he had not seen threats against the Internet users based in Nuevo Laredo in the four years, but the signs of torture were similar to other comparable drug-related violence, CNN reported Tuesday.
The bodies of the bloggers -- a man and a woman -- were found hanging from a Nuevo Laredo bridge Tuesday. The woman, hogtied and disemboweled, was left topless. The bloodied man next to her was hanging by his hands, his right shoulder knifed so deeply that bone was visible.
Signs left near the bodies said the two were killed for denouncing drug cartel activities on a social network. Mexico's drug gangs routinely hang victims from bridges and overpasses as warnings to others, CNN said.
"This is going to happen to all of those posting funny things on the Internet," one sign said. "You better [expletive] pay attention. I'm about to get you."
No one has claimed the bodies since they were found and they remain unidentified, Mancillas said. Investigators are unlikely to determine whether the two victims actually posted anything online about the cartels because people don't usually use their real names online, he said.
The signs near the bodies threatened anyone reporting violent incidents via social media networks, singling out two blogs, Al Rojo Vivo and Blog del Narco, CNN reported. The placards were signed "Z," possibly referencing the Zetas cartel, which operates in the area.
