Unfortunately I never trained in Hawaii. I helped open ABI's mma in goldsboro, NC, and we were an affiliate Nova uniao under rootz. He is an awesome dude and I hate that me and a long time friend moose huffman the owner, had a falling out over the direction of the school. I miss all those guys. Rootz has one of his brown belts in Wilmington and right now those guys are dominating the local mma scene. But if I had never left I would have probably never discovered 10th planet and we wouldn't be talking. I think its bullshit. I mean ok, maybe what tey want to teach is for the street, but as far as me, I don't train to be a street fighter, or to protect myself on the streets. If I want street protection, Ill get myself a 9mm. To me Jiujitsu is a sport and great way of competing in combat sports while going 100% and not hurting your opponent.

Part of this is true in a sense that the art's originality and fundamentals get lost as time passes by but you also have to think about how tournament keep people interested and peaking the interest of new people for the art to grow.

--That's interesting... Helio style competition: you can't hold the sleeve for more than 10 seconds? Sort of reminds me of the evolution of NOGI (doing away with sleeves altogether). I've always thought 10pjj and NOGI are getting BACK to the true fundamentals of the art. Maybe Helio would agree.

I 100% agree with royce with regards to the street fighting. However, some people just want to compete in tournaments. However, if the points jiu jitsu is being marketed for self defence...then yeah..there's the problem. It's interesting to hear him say this as Renzo just said something on this line fairly recently about jiu jitsu..but he was critiquing Rener about "real gracie jiu jitsu".

We really are at a point where BJJ has the potential to turn into TKD for sure. It is a concern. BJJ and MMA are being marketed as being street fighting applicable arts, however with the lack of quality control:muay thai...becomes cardio kickboxing, BJJ becomes tournament BJJ. MMA is assumed to be STREET CERTIFIED.

I think tournaments have helped the sport expand and have made it widely more popular. People love competition. Everybody wants to be the guy in Karate Kid. I'm sure his father didn't intend on his students learning and getting belted from virtual teachers on the internet either (aka gracie university). Royce doesnt seem to have a problem counting the money from that tho.
