Our academy does the self defense portion first. You have to have two stripes on the white belt to take the other classes. I like it that way. I think it is better to know the difference between " street defense" and " tournament" jiu-jitsu.

No doubt, I wouldn't advise playing "X Guard" in a street fight. After a student is "street ready", then I'll add the crazy shit to there game. It's good to have everything in your "back pocket" just in case for some "crazy reason" you need to pull " X Guard " or " Invert Guard " in a real fight. But "Rubber Guard" is the most street ready guard out there, it's damn near " punch proof "

Guys Don't be so " Dense " You only use jiu jitsu in a 1v1 situation, no one is saying play jits while getting jumped, thats stupid. And reality is that most Irate dudes, that walk around talking shit aren't carrying weapons any way. Anyone who's "from the streets" can tell you first hand that it's the " Scary Dudes " you have to worry about. Not so called tough guys. Scared dudes are quick to pull weapons, Trust me on that.

Renzo wouldnt agree that jiu jitsu is only for 1 on 1 situations and I dont either. You have to be smart enough to know when to do what and be aware of the other people and your surroundings but it can be used effectivly and I have defended myself with it many times. Like derrick said there ar stand up techniques in jiu jistu aswell. 1 on 1 rubber guard is much more effective thats why in a street fight you get your friends to keep his friends from stepping in and you show him the twistoplata. I did a twistoplata the other day and now I can see myslef doing it alot more often. Although if you have a bunch of guys try to jump you its probably best to use a style with lots of foot movement and fast hands.

Exactly, When there are "respectable enemies", fights are usually prolonged and not broken up, those usually end up on the ground. A lot of people who have never had fights, have this preconcieved notion in there heads of how random fights go. I thought we solved all this in UFC 1. But I realize that "Ones' Reality" in the "Hood" is much different than "Ones' Reality" in the "Suburbs"

Traditionally jiu jitsu was made for the battle field when a samurai lost his sword the objective was to cripple, kill, or mane the opponent get a weapon and move on to the next. Some dojos do work randori with multiple attackers no running overhand chops but practical attacks from assailants armed or unarmed that can happen in a real life situation the key is execution speed is just accuracy of motion. Ufc 1 proved bjj superior theres no lie about that but theres a difference between fighting in a cage and fighting in the street the cage is still a controled environment. I would ask you did you learn anything from Sakaraba when he was in his prime snapping Gracie arms. I dont distinguish between peoples perceptions of reality and split then into groups i get a better understanding of a man on how he carries himself and if hes of his word.

Snapping Gracie Arms using "Gracie Jiu Jitsu", And this isn't a question of ones' "character" or "Style vs Style" witch you seem to be "overly" hung up on. Only the randomness of "street fights" and the fact that "inner city kids" usually have a lot of experience in these matters. I've had my "fare share" growing up and Trust Me. Tough Guys will fight you 1v1 without friends jumping in. It's the "Scared dudes" that pull weapons and use them out of fear. Thats why it's better to "avoid confrontation" in the street as best you can. I'm sorry kid, but theres not a martial art in the World that will stop a 45 caliber. Unfortunately, I know someone who was too "Scared" to fight a dude 1v1 so he pulled a gun and shot the dude. Hes now doing "life" in a place where you fight to survive every day and Trust Me, He was never a "tough guy" in the neighborhood.
