    NOGI techniques in GI Competition

hi guys was wondering if it is legal to use nogi techniques such as darce chokes, peruvian neckties, anacondas, arm triangles in gi competitions. some guys in england put together a chart of legal techniques but it seems a bit undetailed, im competing at white belt, if anyones got any info would appreciate it so i dont get disqualified. i know stuff like the can opener, 100 percent, twister etc are ilegal cos they r cranks but not sure if the ref will see me doing a neck tie for example and deem it a neck crank?

All of those subs should be cool. I've used the darce in gi comps.

The can opener is almost always illegal, the 100% is usually legal if you aren't using it as a neck crank, and the twister is almost always illegal. At least that's the way it is here.

I can tell you that with some modification you can do almost every single one, even the Twister but using a choke instead. My version of the Peruvian Gi tie is crazy:-) I´m doing videos for all 10thplanet stuff for the Official Planetxjj (10th in a Gi stylin) soon to come! stay tuned, you can now register at www.planetxjj.com

do u know if they weigh u in before the fight with ur belt on aswell as the gi, cos without the belt im under the weight and with the belt im two points of a pound over, do u have to be dead on ur weight eg 76kg on the spot or do they let u off with a pound over?

Its going to depend on the organisers, but under IBJJF rules, its witht he belt on. Its 76kg with the gi, if you're over, you're over. I know that sucks, but you have to be fair - I have dropped up to 9kg to make the 67(+3)kg class before, and with what I went through, I would be furious if they let some guy come in over.

How long do you have until the comp? I can give you some simple advice, tailored to how much you are over and how much time you have left

-how much do you weigh in the morning when you wake up?
-how much does your gi weigh?
-how long before competing do you weigh in? (day before, 1 hour or more before, immediately before your match)

    Ill do what I can

As an aside, its quite hard to get a tight enough grip with most of the front headlock series due to the bulk of the gi collar - get your coach or a team mate to show you the clock choke or the modified "t-rex arm" guillotine (alternatively known as the 'bread basket choke'), these are great for gi comps in lieu of your normal d'arce or anaconda.

any advice u could give me would b great the problem has been is that this week i had a cold and sciatica so training has been limited and fluids have needed to be drunk

Hope I'm not too late. I wouldn't advise any strenuous activities. Weigh yourself in the evening, with the gi on. You need to be within 1kg of the limit, hopefully less.

Take a bath, as hot as you can handle. Submerge yourself as much as possible. I find that I lose about 1kg in 30 minutes.

I like to be on weight with the gi on before going to bed. When I wake up I put it back on and eat/drink according to how much weight I have to play with.

If you are competing immediately before your match, emphasize fluid intake in the morning. Gatorade will help you get your elelctrolytes back. Pack sone energy dense food to chow on after your first match.

Good luck, let us know how you go!!
