For those interested in the hows and whys of rapid weight cutting for competition, I offer the following.
Before I start, I am not for rapid weight cutting. I am one of the few out here who think it is bad for the sport and that it is not good for young athletes to strain themselves repeatedly through dehydration. That said, it happens and will continue to happen... so people should understand how it works and how to do even extreme weight cutting safely. Plus coaches and athletes should know that HARMFUL DRUGS ARE NOT NECESSARY for rapid cutting and great results can be obtained without further risk caused by many diuretics.
DISCLAMER: Extreme weight cutting can kill you! Be smart, it's not just your performance that can suffer!

The best articles on extreme weight cutting and understanding the science behind it I have ever come across recently are by Timothy Ferris (who for the world sanshou championships who cut from 187 to 165 at weigh in and then fought at 193 the next day. That's a drop of 22 lbs in 24 hours and a gain of 28 lbs. in about 20 hours.
He does a good job explaining it so that any of you coaches out there can get a better understanding of the mechanisms of weight cutting through safe dehydration and re-hydration. Obviously you do not have to take his methods to this extreme.

The second is the article referenced by Ferris in the above: How to Cut Maximum Weight for Competitions with a 24-Hour Weigh In -
By Matt Kroczaleski
Matt went from 250 to 219 (a loss of 31 pounds) in 24 hours and then put it all back on again in less than 24 hours while cutting weight for the Arnold 2007 lifting competitions. His method of cutting is detailed in the following article:

For those of you involved in high levels of competition that justify these measures, you can engineer an extreme weight advantage for your matches.
