When I was a kid I used to fight a lot. I grew up on Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Van Damme, Steven Segal....I loved fighting. Been fighting since kindergarted. Not even joking. LOL.

Anyway, my uncle used to bully me with his wrestling moves. I saw UFC 4 when I was about 12 and I started to notice that this guy (Royce Gracie) was doing stuff that I would instinctively do when I would fight (I would go lateral drop from clinch and pull mount and tee off). But this guy was doing it as his martial art. Then I went back and rented UFC 1-5 and saw there was more to it. Then i started using those moves on my uncle when he'd try to bully me. Suddenly I could beat him. And I was hooked. As much as I love watching great striking in the UFC, I will always be partial to awesome JJ in the UFC.

There were aspects of wing chun that I believe are very effective. IE being able to interpret what your opponent is going to do by touch alone, from sticky hands techniques. I actually still use some of the blocks in my stand up sparring. It also gave me a confidence in being "in the pocket". But realistically there are huge holes in the system. There's not really any techniques to deal with if someone grabs you and wants to clinch or grapple. There are a couple like how to escape a bear hug but I dont think its as effective as other styles out there.
So really to answer your question, on the whole, wing chun is only really effective against other wing chun practitioners or someone that doesn't know anything.
