    Weapons Systems

Kali came up in a discussion recently and it got me thinking about the different weapon systems out there and which would be the most effective. I imagine Kali would be a great one to learn being that you could use many things in your environment such as even a pencil. Plus just knowing how to defend against weapons seems like a good thing to know.
Does anybody supplement their martial arts training with a weapon of any sort?

Magazines ...I was taught back in 2006 when I was taking Muay Thai and Wing Chung from my instructor that a magazine can be rolled up and used like a knife for stabbing, It's not going to penetrate the skin like a knife but it does hurt like hell. The tighter you roll it the better of a weapon it becomes. And magazines are everywhere.

Oh that's an easy one to answer brother. Dog Brothers Kali Tudo/Stick grappling training is by far the best for stick/knife/gun training. I'm putting myself out there by saying it too since there are many other great ones. Marc "Crafty Dog" Denny is basically the Eddie Bravo or Marcelo Garcia of weapons training. I'd train this, but absolutely 0 of my buddies who train martial arts are interested in a combat weapons training system. Ironically, I know a bunch of kids who like that XMA *dancing with weapons to music* type training.

I'd second Dog Brothers, IMO Eric Knaus/Marc Denny are/were more like the Gracies in that when they started DB their philosophy was essentially taking weapons training to the most practical, realistic level in an open forum. People who were fantastic at forms training/flow drills etc. turned out to be not so good as the level of contact increased.

We supplement the advanced class with single and double escrima sticks. We recently talked about adding knife defense and offense as well as the ASP baton. I personally studied all of these as well as kendo. However, for real world purposes I think we've settled on a baton class and knife.

100% right on the money. Caveman strikes that are properly set up bust through most of the pretty "forms/flow drill" stuff. Triangle footwork and caveman strikes = good game sir. Oh, and not to mention how these guys spar. "There is no better training for the act than the act itself."
