Cool response, bro. What I do different from what you were doing is:

    1. Assuming you go to your right like that, leave your left elbow on his side THE WHOLE TIME, until your throw your leg between his legs. I'll pinch down with my elbow and keep my hand by their hip to slow the spin down. I'll also put a little more of my weight on the side I'm attacking. Not a huge shift, just a little. That turns them a little and makes it a harder to turn away because it makes him face you. Just make sure you're hugging that arm snug!

    2. Again, when you hook the arm, only hook with one hand until the very end, after you've thrown your leg over.

    3. I can usually break the grip when I take the baby step to get my hips closer to theirs after I've come to the judo side control looking position. I try to turn their elbow to the sky a little bit and I'll rotate my torso slightly towards them, using the width of my body to break the grip. If they're super strong and can hold on through that, you can finish anyway at the very end with their hands still clasped.

    4. You threw your far side leg between theirs. It should be the near side. Once you've gotten your leg over, make your feet pray and THEN double up on the arms.

I really appreciate you giving it a shot. I've pulled it off on a couple of blue belts, one was actually a champ for some MMA promotion down in TN, but that's the highest rank I've gotten with it. I've only rolled with a purple belt once and he smoked my head the whole time, so I never got to try for ANY subs!!!

Let me know if those adjustments work for you. This move works for me all the time, but then again I'm not exactly swimming with sharks.
