Same thing just happened to me yesterday a couple of times. I'd smile when I'd get the tap and frown when I'd lose the position. My partner always smiled when they got out. Hahahhaa! That's awesome man. I know what you mean. I think when you're about to get armbarred or rnc'd you are focused because a mess up could mean bad things.
The leg locks, even though they can mean even worse things, seem to be escapable and don't seem to be a credible threat. But now that I think of it, in competition they are very credible because they guys will take it without hesitation. So visualizing myself in competition, or against a person that I know won't hesitate to take my foot off if I don't tap, I don't think I would be smiling. I'll have to verify this next time.
