Rener Gracie speaks on Eddie Bravo

Eddie can do alot more with the RG than most ppl, yeah there may be killers that aren't as flexible as Bravo but they still have more flexibility than your average joe. The argument isn't that 10P isn't effective (it is!) its rather of Rener's statements on the universality of GJJ vs 10P and the two approaches to adding/withholding techniques

That may be true. However, I don't see it as being the most fun. And that's really all that matters to me at my (advanced) age. While you may enjoy knowing that your GJJ instructor has determined exactly which techniques are the most effective in a street fight and he's determined exactly how to teach each "slice" of that technique and he's going to teach it today exactly like the next GJJ instructor will teach it tomorrow...I don't find that interesting. When I visit 10th Planet HQ and my instructor is Eddie Bravo, I love the fact that my BJJ teacher may spend 20 minutes talking about why he thinks UFOs may really exist, before he gets around to showing me any BJJ techniques.

I will continue to practice Gracie Bullyproof with my 7 year old daughter and I hope she can attend Gracie Bullyproof Camp this summer as she did last summer, and I will also continue to recommend the Gracie Combatives DVDs to anyone who wants to learn the "right" way to do the basics. However, when I try to explain to someone why jiu jitsu is so amazing and why it's so much more exciting to train in than say, Karate, I will tell them what it's like to train in a place like 10th Planet where there's no ego and there's no agenda. A place where no one is vested in proving that a "Grandmaster" knew it all, or that a certain set of techniques is superior to another set of techniques. It's a free flowing, open environment where the head instructor is quick to say, "I'm going to have Bob teach this leg lock technique because I suck at it." And while you may enjoy knowing that if you fall into a coma today and wake up 25 years from now, you will be able to walk into any GJJ training center and pick up exactly where you left off because nothing at all will have changed...I think that sucks. I'm pleased to know that any particular technique that Eddie is teaching today might one day be omitted from the system if it is proven to be ineffective or if a superior technique emerges. My instructor Marcelo Garcia basically invented the X-Guard. Today it isn't his go to move. He's already moved on to the One Leg X-Guard. I can't imagine where he will be in 25 years.

I hope you continue to enjoy your training as much as I do mine...

I listened to the portion of his interview on the flexibility thing. I know some of the guys that mash on me the most in 10th planet riverside, don't have the best flexibility and rarely pull RG.

I think that to say 10p is only for flexible practicioners is a major fallacy. In fact, in any sport, if one is flexible, it can only help and not hurt. I would argue that Ryan Hall and Jeff Glover are very flexible, yet they aren't practicioners of 10p. So unfortunately, I will have to discredit Rener's argument that 10p is for only those with flexibility.

10p has become more than the RG or Twister. It has become more of a haven for progressive thinking practicioners, that aren't afraid to push the limits and challenge the status quo. Jiu jitsu is ever changing... This is why you see so many of 10p guys putting out their own techniques on YouTube, etc...

Excellent Rick. Very well said. I have to say I agree with you 100%.
10th Planet has it all plus killer leg locks. Eddie has a guy that goes
and trains with Marcelo Garcia and then brings that stuff back. (It's
is only job.) Dean Lister is a 10th Planet fan. Sean Bollinger and Jeremy
Field learn from everybody and admire guys like Jeff Glover and Ryan Hall and
learn from them. Whatever works 10th Planet uses. Now we have leglocks
from the number teacher of leg locks in the world with Rick going to Gokor's
two times a week. We have Chris H. brown belt in 10th P. and a leglock
expert sharing all his leglock knowledge. The Gracies seem to think
they have it all and don't need anything else. I've heard them say it's bastard
Jiu-Jitsu what the rest of us do. Sean Bollinger and Jeremy Fields trained for years with the Gracies.
I gave them the Gracie Combatives and they watch them and then said that
was all the stuff they had already learned from training with the Gracies. The Machados are Gracie black
belts and grew up training with the Gracies. Their mother is a Gracie. So Eddie
Bravo is a black belt of a Gracie black belt. Eddie is a open minded and a grappling genius.
He shares all his techniques with everybody. The Gracies would never let anybody film
their classes, seminars or workouts. Eddie Bravo encourages people to film his seminars and classes.
The Gracies try to hide techniques.

Rick is exactly right. U have to have flexibility for alot of stuff in jj though. I mean the more flexible u are the better right? Anybody seen "choke"? Rickson says he tries to make his body as flexible and as strong as possible for jj. They have the same basic ideas and understandings as we do, they just try to make 10p look like a gimick. I've actually had a student from a de la riva affiliate school tell me Eddie just claims all his techniques are his own and comes up with trendy names for good marketing. Its all jj. Its all good. We as a community play all different styles. I love lockdown but I've been all over some tornado guard lately. Its time for them to catch up with the rest of the world and realize that to be the best you need to expose urself to everything, to be prepared for anything....to be complete
