LOL the right time ... dude the guy LET him put the choke on it wasnt a match ... and technique wasnt the issue ...'wait til he isnt expecting it ... how are you going to do that wait til he is asleep ... I still believe that Jiu Jitsu is the best art for self defense especially for smaller people ... you arent gonna trade shots with a much larger frame and expect to do well unless you are much better ... but fi you dont think there is an element of truth to the working on squeeze and core ... If you dont believe that the Gracies had mad core strength etc from repping out and sparring lots then thats too bad for you... As for saying that we dont follow the same principles to "cook"an opponent ... thats not true ... I cook larger guys all the time .... and you cant cook everyone ..... In Royces match against a much more athletic Matt Hughes (and Im by no stretch a Hughes fan) where was the cooking and the right time ...you cant ignore conditioning and reps ... and truly believe you can go out and beat people in any situation. Again you dont pick your opponent on the street, you cant choose his physical attributes or his knowledge, so if you really want to be prepared then work care and rep. As for do reps over and over ... yeah Gracies do that too ... its called muscle memory ... you have to have your body trained to respond like Pavlovs dog to situations, I dont want to think about how to do an arm bar ... I perform one. Add stress and adrenaline and you better intrinsically know what you are doing ... Next add in real life ... adrenaline dumps will cook you ... if you dont compete , and or you dont have core stregth and cardio then you are gonna get "cooked" yourself. You've truly over simplified the thing. At the time that Eddie did this he was a blue belt under JJ Machado .... wait isnt that a direct descendant of GJJ .... He wasnt developing his own system at the time, he was using the system as it was ... Also check Eddies interviews ... not a direct quote but "I didnt worry about what Royler looked like, he wasnt yoked and I thought I could do this, but when I gripped up with him it was like he had alien arms ..." core strength from years of training and reps and conditioning. Your last point, yeah survival ... totally agreed and if I train in a manner that doesnt reflect the needed result then it wont be effective ... I might as well go back to doing TKD patterns in my basement and pretend its gonna slaughter any who oppose me ... The Gracies brought to us something amazing and pointed out the need to change traditional martial artists perception of how to train ... and IMO then stopped the progress themselves, or at least slowed it do to close mindedness, it is by far one of the most complete singular arts out there I admit ... but things have to evolve.
