    Lockdown question

    Hi everyone !

Currently I'm a blue belt in traditional bjj but since few months I've been playing with 10th Planet half guard and Lockdown position. I had a lot of success with it but when I spar with heavier and stronger guys (not much though about 20lbs)and when I try go for the oldschool most of the times I can easly grab and pull his foot but problem is to get on my knees .They just put a lot of pressure on me and I can't do it ,but if I try realease my lockdown and bring my right leg back to get on my knees I feel stuck and lockdown just blocking me .

Is there any tip how to open your lockdown and get to your knees ?

Are you doing the correct footwork? Straighten the inside leg, bring the outside leg over your straight leg, keeping their leg hooked. You can now post off the outside foot and it will be easier for you to pull your trapped leg out and get to your knees. You can see this on a few videos, only a Google search away

Also, make sure you aren't posting on your elbow, keep your shoulder and head posted on the mat. Stay on your side!

Coach Alder gave a great little saying when he was here a few years ago that has helped me and my guys immensely. "Ankle, Ankle, Heel to Butt". Its a mantra for the 1/2 guard killers in my gym.

Using the Old School Sweep as and example:Lock Down, Whip Up, then grab and control his foot. Then draw your Ankle to his Ankle, leg curl the same leg to your butt (Heel to Butt), then withdraw your leg underneeth his leg to come up to your knees, Head up, pull his post leg out from underneath him, take him to the back corner where his has no post, high leg back to side control to complete the sweep and the pass.

Sorry to bother you Herzog but i am having the same problems and i wanted to make sure i fully understand your explanation.

So using your example with the lockdown on the right leg of my opponent, when you say
draw your Ankle to his Ankle
do you mean my right ankle towards the ankle of the foot i am holding for the old school sweep?
