GSP was a better fighter than Mendes and he's evolved much faster. GSP was also more dangerous. I don't think Mendes will improve as fast as GSP did. It's wishful thinking, and I'd be happy for him, but he doesn't show that kind of ability. He's gotten by on athleticism and wrestling. That's not enough to beat Aldo.

What you need to understand is that the first toss, especially this slam Mendes was attempting works best on first attempt. Aldo knew he was going down, so he panicked and did the knee jerk reaction of grabbing the fence. Yes the second attempt failed, Aldo is a good enough fighter to imminently recognize whats happening and change his stance.
Aldo's also a good enough fighter to know how to time a knee. You guys are really buggin. There was not a single shining moment for Mendes except an "almost." Almost doesn't count.
That takedown happened with a minute and a half on the clock. Mendes hasn't put away anybody from top position in a minute and a half. The outcome of the fight would not have been much different. Mendes would've just gotten a TD and gotten into the 2nd round. The fence grab isn't as big a deal as you guys think. Aldo outclassed him the whole match.
Nothing in that fight makes me think that the fight would be much different in a rematch or if the fence grab didnt' happen.
