    Heavy weight jiu jitsu

I way 243 and im 6"1 ive been grappling for five years and one thing has always bugged me, and Thats the lack of attention payed to The heavy weight aces of jiu jitsu. Obviously there are many Heavy weight jiu jitsu fighters in MMA as well as Jiu jitsu competition, but there is less coverage of heavy weight jiu jitsu compared to the lighter weights. Of course you have fighters like Roger Gracie, Jeff Monson and others but there is not enough coverage in my opinion at least.(by heavy weight i mean all divisions that are considered heavy weight). so what are you guys opinion on big guy bjj?

I think if a big guy is active, people will pay attention to him, but it's no accident that there are more stars in the lighter weight classes. Hulking dudes tend to be slower, tire more easily, and are more likely than their lightweight counterparts to shove each other for 5 minutes and win by two points rather than showcase their skills on the mat. I think that lately, Jeff Monson falls under this category of grappler. But I will happily tune in to Cyborg Abreu.

Simply put, the lighter the guys are, the more technical they usually are. If you want to see how the future of the HW's are going to look, you need only look at the present day LW's.

As a bigger guy too- i'm 6'2 and 215 and DAMN i wish i could keep the level of action that the little guys do. It's not a NORMAL thing for us big guys to be as active...thats all. im not saying we CANT, its just not as easy.

or maybe im just a lazy fuck...this is probably the real answer.

I think it's not that HW's can't do it but that it's not as much of a necessity as it is for the little guys.

As Li Mu Bai said in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: "Real power comes without effort" which I interpret as "you don't need strength if you have technique".

Lightweights are forced to develop better technique because they do not have the strength or weight to power out of situations. The only way a heavyweight would be like a lightweight technique wise would be for them to regularly roll with the incredible hulk.

Only if people roll with people that are of different weight classes, which I doubt is happening all that much at the top. I think it has more to do with it the physiology of heavy weights making speed and flexibility less easy to come by.

I didn't know that. I pay attention, but that's cuz I'm a big dude and I'm watching for styles to emulate. I'm a big fan of Cyborg. Big fan of Vinny Mag. Braulio Estima.

But it's probably because the lighter guys are flashier. People are saying more technical. IDK about that. Werdum is pretty damn technical. And as boring as he is, so is Monson. But lighter guys are flashier and more dynamic. You have flying armbars and flying darce chokes and all sorts of cool looking things. The heavies don't really do stuff like that.
