Nogueira's Conspiracy Theory: MMA Judges Are Biased Against Brazilians

PRIDE and UFC star, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, or 'Big Nog' has a conspiracy theory. He thinks there's a rivalry between American's and Brazilian's, and he implies that MMA Judges in the US are biased against the Brazilians.

He said as much when he talked to Globo TV. Here's a translation from Bloody Elbow's own Orcus:

"Americans have a rivalry with Brazilians, that is obvious. And why is that? It’s because the UFC has three hundred fighters under contract, and from those three hundred fighters we are fifty. The Brazilians are fifty, and we have more belts than they do."

"So from three hundred we are fifty, and with those fifty we get there and take care of business. They win (more) because they have more (people), they have a bigger infrastructure inside their gyms, they have support for the sport since they’re kids. But the sport is growing in Brazil and I believe that..."

"They look at us with (malicious) eyes, let’s say it like that. If you’re going to fight an American in the US you have to win the fight with emphasis because otherwise… You can’t win it by a thin margin."

Off the top of my head, the only controversial decision involving a Brazilian fighter losing to an American fighter recently, would be Lyoto Machida losing that razor thin decision against Quinton Jackson. For the record, I do disagree with that decision, but even then, it was a really close fight, and it wasn't really a robbery.

We do see a few crazy scorecards every now and then, but I don't think we can really blame that on nationalism, racism, or whatever, rather than them simply being bad at judging fights.

Nog's brother, Rogerio was even awarded one of those controversial decisions. I wonder if Jason Brilz has his own conspiracy theory on this.

He's on target but he hasn't hit the bulls eye. What he should be saying is MMA judges suck, and that we need a new generation of judges that REALLY understand the sport. The only problem is that the people who really understand the sport are fighters. You can't have fighters be judges because every fighter (Subconscious or consciously) will have bias for against a camp or person or whatnot. This is not to say certain judges right now may or may not have a bias anyway. For example due to Cecil Peoples may be bias towards karate fighters based on his past. We need to find balance really have professionals from all walks of like judge you know. the hard part is achieving that balance its not something that i can explain (if i could i would work for the state athletic commission).

Does the UFC have to pay to bring these guy to america so they can fight? If that's the case I can see the why there would be a lack of foreign fighters. I think it boils down to having the best fighters. I don't think the UFC is passing up on talented guys because the UFC hates Brasil...I think Nogeuiras shoulder grew a vagina in its recovery process.

Nah, I don't think the UFC hates Brazil. Now that I think about it, they have a new TUF show out there and recently had HUGE ratings and another HUGE event in Brazil with one of the most electric events ever. I don't think the UFC hates Brazilian fighters at all. And as time goes on, I'm sure the UFC will add a lot more Brazilian fighters after this TUF Brazil helps some guys rise to the top.

I agree. As i reread this line from my post "I don't think the UFC is passing up on talented guys because the UFC hates Brazil" i may have construed that i thought UFC hated Brazil, but i don't think they hate Brazil.

I don't believe that statement I just made... but his statement is just as equally ridiculous.

"Brazil is so awesome and america is just butthurt so they cheat us."

    LOL.

I enjoy watching the Brazilian style of fighting better, but I don't think the lack of Brazilian fighters is from racism like Nog might think. I hate to break it to him, but as of right now, they're a liability. The language barrier is a problem. Some of them have criminal records/warrants (Falcao), and the cost of constantly flying them out. Things might change with TUF going to Brazil though. They have been recruiting some good guys lately though. Diego Brandao. Do Bronx. Barboza. Renan Barao.

The more I think about it, the more I think Nog is trippin.
