    My Dilemma: 10th Planet Hartford

I come for jiu jitsu. Thats it. I love the rubberiness of my guard.

In addition to owning the book for 4.5 months now, I also have owned Mastering the Twister for 2 months. Its done leaps and bounds for my mount and D'arce

However I would rather not play with any spinal locks (e.g. twister). Its a sick move, great way to turn oft-transitional positions such as Reverse Kesa Gatame into finishes, but I am quite happy with every other submission in the game.

For the longevity of my body, I would rather not play with the twister. I get ample training right now and already quite happy, and at school I just happen to be 30 mins away form 10th Planet Hartford.

Would I be welcomed if I asked of my rolling partners to exclude the twister from their games?

If you were my rolling partner and you said to avoid the Twister, I'd say "no problem". If your partner is good, he or she shouldn't crank too hard on the twister, anyways. Also, it's not allowed in some tournaments. If you're worried about your neck, just tell your partner before hand.

when i went back to ct on leave after my last deployment i payed 10th planet hartford a couple of visits. the atmosphere is awesome, the other students have great attitudes, and john is the ultimate professional. i wouldnt even be worried about the twister. i rolled with a few guys and john himself and dont recall any of them using the move at all.

    There's Renato's voice in my head :-O

But yeah.... If you've got a problem with the twister, tell your training partners. Personally I'm way more concerned about twisting leg looks.

To be honest with you should start working on defend the subsmission harder then asking them not to it, simply because it hurts. If you have back problems or other health concerns thats a different case all together. I get hit with rolling toe holds week by my coach and yes it hurts like hell. If I dont tap fast enough something will hurt or broken. Instead of asking him not to do it, I work harder to stop it. JUst my thought.

You could also ask them to stop at the setup just before the crank and then you'll tap. When my arm was sore, I would just tell my partners that if they get the arm extended they win, but to please not crank it because the elbow was busted. Everybody I asked obliged. Personally, I don't think that sparring partners communicate enough.

Like for example, right now I'm still working on my back. It's almost back to 100% but everybody in my gym knows not to crush me with a vertical stack, conversely if we approach the position I also tap out, out of concern for my back. You got to give and take. If you don't like the twister tell them and tap prematurely, hell you could tap as early as when they gain their baseball bat grip.

If your partner is good you shouldn't have to worry about getting hurt unless you're the one being stubborn. If someone were to ask me not to go for a certain submission because it made them uncomfortable I would respect that. There's a ton of stuff you can do from the truck anyways.

Anyone is welcome to come train at my academy who is willing to learn. As far as respecting your wishes: that's a big thing with me. ALL of my students would respect anything a partner asks as long as they reciprocate. We all get banged up from time to time, and as an old man, I sometimes choose not to roll if I'm not feeling up to it (although I often train when I shouldn't). Don't be hesitant to come in and train or to ask someone not to do something. However, don't be afraid to drill a technique or counters to it either. Everyone at my place is cool, and I always emphasize being a good training partner and how essential that is.
    Jason, thanks for the props.
