To Gi, or Not to Gi

i have to decide here. There is only one school in town that teaches submission grappling. But its on the other side of town, and they teach grappling so no recognition of skill(e.i color belts). There is however a bjj school down the street. But i REALLY hate the gi. REALLY HATE. could i get some opinions please? what should i do?

first instinct from what i see is really hate the gi....shit i'd say don't do it if you hate it...if you don't mind it that's another story. do they offer no gi at this class or is it strictly gi? how far is other side of town? 20 min isn't bad if it is. also do a trial (usually they have like a free day or more) to try out both and see which one you like. you might even like the gi or environment of the school. good luck

Go to the jiu jitsu school if you love jiu jitsu. I'm sure you'll met others that will be willing to do some jiu jitsu with you without the Gi. Just have to make the friends first Have you been to the grappling school, do they teach any jiu jitsu submissions or is it just wrestling?

I've been to a few submission grappling tournaments. It was just a no-Gi jiu jitsu match. Allot of wrestlers but most jiu jitsu submissions were legal. There is a difference between wrestling and submission grappling. Technically 10th planet it just submission grappling. If you want to learn brazilian jiu jitsu then that is with the Gi. More modified take-downs/throws & a lot of grip techniques as of how to break them and the proper way to do them.

I really hate the gi, but I also do judo and then i have to wear it ... but in JJ with no-gi itīs much more freedom of movement and these belts it has to be on your waist , but it's never there ....so i prefer No-Gi

Since I've started training I've heard it called a a few things from american jiu jitsu to submission grappling. I just know where I train we don't get ranked in no-Gi cause there isn't a belt system. At tournaments its usually novice, beginner, advanced, & expert. I've started training Gi after about 18 months cause I like the way the Gi looks & would like to get belt rankings. But that's just my opinion

Depends. Do you hate it because you suck at it? Do you hate it because you dont know how to defend against the gi attacks? Because you cant use your white belt fury to get away? Go with the school that gives the better instruction.
