As the title suggests I just ran my regions first no-gi jj tournament this past weekend.
When I had the idea to hold the event I had no idea if it would work as my area has one blue belted practitioner (and he just moved a few hours away the week before to be able to train with his instructor regularly) a handfull of hardcore rollers and an ever revolving door of guys that train here and there and then dissapear.
The idea was to develop a yearly tournament that would build interest in our sport and hopefully springboard our regional competitors to the larger tournaments in the metropolitan area.
Well despite heavy rain and nearby flooding, the fact that an entire dojo that was going to compete went to the Aussie UFC show (who could blame them really) it WORKED!!!
20 competitors on the mats, which by no means is massive but given the obstacles presented was great!
Even got some guys going to the next Metro tournament in 2 weeks!
And I took out gold in my division 23 pts to single digits twice and finished in the final with The Schafer arm-triangle.
It's just the beginning of great things for GV Grapplers Assoc. (find us on Facebook) and future 10th Planet GV Hotbox!!!
