They are more than not a filler, but what you can call a Nutritious filler, they hold alot of water and fill you, but they do have *some* good nutrition in the forms of small amounts of vitamins, fiber, a little sugar. They are both very low in kcal, so for people dieting can provide further low kcal carbohydrate sources.
I think the purpose of putting them in a smoothy like this, (in addition to the added taste and vitamins) is that kale is very thick when blended, and adding water saturated vegetables allows it to endup much more a drinkable smoothie rather than a slightly liquid paste.
