Am I a sandbagger???

Many of you know me and I've had the pleasure of training and rolling with some of you. I've been repping 10th Planet for 5 years but as of late, due to personal and financial issues. I have not been able to train. I recently visited a "John Doe" Jiu Jitsu school just to drop in and take a free class. I was very humble and respectful and wore my Jeet Kune Do shirt. I was asked if I knew jiu jitsu and I told them that I had no belt rank or formal training but I had attended seminars and trained with some talented grapplers. They were happy to have me but after class there were alot of stink eyes and even the instructor was not as welcoming as before. I shook everyones hand and thanked them but as I was leaving I heard the word "sandbagger". I did nothing and went on my way. So my question is...am I actually a sandbagger???

Of course you are sandbagging. Once you reach a certain skill level you are not allowed to train anymore and you must stop doing jiu-jitsu, or you are a sandbagger. That's how it works.

Lol at sandbagging a class. I think you were very honest. But you can get a lot of info at seminars. Maybe you shoulda told them you've been involved with JJ for 5years? Either way, don't sell yourself short. And don't sell the system short either.

I guess it depends on how you approached the rolling portion of the class.

If I am visiting somewhere I don't try to win the "matches." What's the point in that? I'm there to learn and gain a different perspective on jiu jitsu; to deepen my understanding of the philosophies and principles that lie underneath the techniques. So I roll with their guys accordingly. Sometimes you tap them out. Sometimes you don't.

If you were trying to tap everyone out, they probably took it as a one man dojo storm. If guys like that show up at our place, we give em the biz.

Brandon- Yeah I understand what you mean. I was very humble going in. I rolled slow to sharpen some escapes. Worked on my weak top game a little but I wasn't Bruce Lee in Chinese connection or anything. I'm 33 and have a wife and kids. I don't want the biz. I have mouths to feed lol.

so have you or do you train at a 10p school or were serious about learning alot from seminars? i think most people who take a free class are legit beginners. that being said it sounds like you did really well against alot of the guys at the gym you attended. i mean.. i could see why they called you a sand bagger. i dont know your full situation so i cant say

Im not saying you did this at all. But I have. And I am pretty sure this is what there mindset was. Before I became legitimate, I would drop in to schools and downplay the shit out of myself in case I sucked or they were ridiculously good. They would ask me where I learned jj, and I would smuggishly reply "The internet and Barnes and Noble." Well knowing I was a handful for any blue belt and leaving out the fact that I was constantly thinking about jj and gettin a load of reps and rolling. Then I would proceed on with my one man storming, semi-subconsciously mind you. Deep down I think I wanted to get the 'biz' and in all truthfulness it would kinda suck if they didnt have a 'biz' to get thrown at you. Did you receive tha biz? Anyway, in hindsight, I would just reply "Cuzzin. I LOVE me some jj, and ive drilled a shit ton of 10th planet. Im lookin forward to trainin with you today." If you are technically superior, you just come across as well practiced, and if they are good as fuck then awesome.

My main pet peeve about walk-ins is over coaching. When I see someone constantly wanting to talk and drill and coach during free rolling. I do my damnest to give him something to coach. Tha biz if you will.
