I wasn't able to make it out to this year's NAGA STL, but I did overhear some hate being slung around by a local BJJ school. Talking about how there was some serious sandbagging going on by the 10th Planet schools. Knowing that the IL 10P schools have only been around for a short while and the Springfield and Omaha crews repping like they always do, I don't see how there could be any sandbagging...just bitching about how the 10P system works too well for Gi schools. =) I put some of the hate to rest, but it will always be there. So sad. Anyway, thought I'd share that our 10P family is wrecking house here in the Midwest and gaining some attention, both good and bad, to the skill that we have out here. Much love!

It's hard to sandbag in the expert division.

10th planet Omaha won 13 golds 8 silvers 3 bronze at 10th planet Naga St Louis. The ninja ant took gold expert teens and expert men's. Matt took gold expert men's and masters. It was a big day for all 10th planet.

If you get hated on, it's likely because you're doing something right. If you're that dominant that people accuse you of sandbagging, that's a huge compliment. I want to get accused of sandbagging one day.

The NoGi rules, in regards to levels, are subjective anyway...like Brandon was pointing towards. It's hard to sandbag in a level that has no limits. And for the most part, everything I've ever seen of 10P vs BJJ, all Novice/Beginners in BJJ have never done nearly as well as the beginners in 10P. It's that Beginner/Intermediate division that's rough when it comes to the Gi folks. Which brings up a point...should there be a ranking system for NoGi in tournaments (similar to Gi)? If so, how do you work in the wrestlers? Is it fair to have a person that's grappled for 5yrs (let's say baby purple/sr blue being the average for that time) go against a black belt or collegiate wrestler? Should there be another division for NoGi beyond expert or just before it? Thoughts? Probably a new thread topic or has been an old one in the past, but too lazy to do the research here at work.

Gary, I'm sure I know what school is claiming 10th Planet sandbagged. We will see next time when the winners of the non expert divisions are forced by NAGA to move up. Correct me if I'm wrong but NAGA makes a person move up in skill level if they win a no gi division(which they should) but I have seen blue belts win multiple blue belt divisions in the gi and they never move up until they are promoted to purple. Isnt this sandbagging????

What is sandbagging anyways? There are guys that train for years without ever bothering to test for another belt.
I don't personally think it's fair for a guy who has been a white belt for 2 years to compete against a guy who is a whitebelt for 5 months, but that kind of differential in training is always going to be there in the lower belt levels. I don't think it can be avoided.

Like others here said, once you get up into brown/black it's a non-issue.

NAGA tries to level the playing field by basing their No-GI divisions on the amount of time you have been training and not belt level. Novice being 6 months and under, Beginner being 6 months to 2 years.
