Technically, a white belt who has been broken could be considered the equivalent to a grappling dummy. You know the kind i mean, came in like a stallion trying to murder only to find that they in fact were the ones who will be handled thoroughly by experienced people. If they happen to not get too intimidated and quit, they eventually kind of calm down in attempt to mimic those who "get it." It's almost a little phase before they start to develop an A game where it's almost like they allow anything to happen to them. That's when you have a complete grappling dummy at your disposal. As far as a literal inanimate object that one could grapple with? IDK. I guess it could be beneficial but I've never tried. If I couldn't/can't train and really need a workout, i will do circuit stuff mixing some jiu jitsu warmups and agility exercises.

Jason scully has a dvd set with solo grappling drills. Here are some of them that he put on youtube

Although, to be honest, I usually stick to granbys, technical stand ups and sit outs when drilling solo

ive got a dummy and its really nice actually. my bedroom is matted and i just roll out of bed and do drills mostly. i find top game a lot easier the bottom game when drilling with a dummy becuase you need to adjust the dummy constantly. on the other hand your open guard improves with that so theres always positives.

in saying all that im getting in a lot of omoplata drills and i find that just being able to do a move 30-50 times with out feeling like the other guy should be getting in some reps is quite nice. its all about getting what you can out of it while understanding the restrictions, such as no matter how good you are at getting your dummy in a move. doing it on something alive and kicked is a lot different.

While there is no arguing having another person to drill with is the best, I still use my grappling dummy ( I bought a submission master dummy a few years ago, and its still holding up pretty well), mostly for top game. You can do most of the open guard passing warm ups on one pretty easily without having to reset the legs since they are in a permanent hip flexed position. Also just going through the movements of the berimbolo is pretty good too, just getting used to inverting with controling that foot.

However, without a doubt, if you have access to anybody you can drill with on a consistent basis, I would suggest saving your money. Just my 2 cents, tho.

I use one of those giant exercise balls just for flow position movement drills. But being older if I don't do that every day im so stiff by class time I can't move as smooth as I need to. Helps keep my transitions from getting clunky. And they are fun as hell to bounce around on.

These types of exercises have TRANSFORMED my game. Especially animalistic crawls. One you get the hang of the movements you can combine them together for some crazy workouts; some of which you realize can have direct usefulness towards grappling.

Definitely doesn't make you better at jiu jitsu. Only jiu jitsu does that, obviously. But these have definitely allowed for greater growth in my game.

    Just sayin'
