Don't fit in?

Anybody else have this problem in their martial arts training? I train with a good bunch of guys,but they're super conservative types who make me and my "lower class" lifestyle feel,well,out of place. I'm in my 40's,a dad too,but I'm very open minded about new things. Everyone at my school is white collar,listen to "classic" rock,no tatoos,hate 10th P,etc. I've spent my whole life questioning things,and sometimes I feel "traditional" BJJ schools are as bad as "traditional" Karate places. Anybody else?

Never been to a BJJ place anywhere and not seen a tattoo. You have discovered an anomaly. I suppose you never have two groups of people grappling that roll into one another either?

We don't roll as part of class (another anomaly). Only during open mat. Usually only one or two of us roll. We also share our space with an Aikido school!

i have been to a bunch of different bjj schools and i have definately experienced a place just like that, well not the rolling one at a time thats strange. but i was at a lame school for a couple of years that was very traditional and closed minded. when i changed schools and had a teacher really focus on drilling my game took off.. i advise you to do the same if you can.

i started training @ a small school where the instructer wouldnt let us practice @ home! He said it was like training at another school!! i left and am happy that i did...
its very important to find the right school/instructer....

i feel the same way about my gym as far was the being out to new systems.
only one guy in my gym studies 10thP other then myself and we've been training 10thP since day one of our jiu jitsu training.
but it seems the 9 out of 10 guy really dont like it but we have been proving that it works.
earlier this week my friend and i were going over some jap/bollinger necktie and all we kept hear was "OH thats so easy to get out of".kind of a pain that ish in your ear. but not even 5 mins later one of the guys(a blue belt) came up and asked to roll. then BAM go to the halfguard got the vicegrip and just dove him(=japanesenecktie) and he had no idea what to do. he unhooked his leg then BAM!!! slap on the D'Arce it was tight but my arms just gave out so i just hooked his top leg and back to the necktie it was a good roll. after it all he ask how to set it up and every time hes in my HG now i feel him setting it up hahaa. hopefully more people jump on the wagon so my game can get better.
Any of the high rank 10thP guy going to be doing a seminar in the bay area ,CA any time soon that i would love to go and learn stuff from a human and not a book or video

I'm a mum of 3, not a late teens/early twenties but early thirties and I don't have any problem with the guys I roll with and the youngest being 14! I feel that if your uncomfortable training with fellow partners then quite possibly its the wrong gym for you, I would not pay money to train somewhere that I felt unhappy or unaccepted by the people I was training with. You all suppose to have a common interest and there should be no discrimination. I personally would find somewhere else to train where I felt comfortable........Jiu jitsu clubs are like a box of chocolates.....

ya im planing on going as soon as i start making enough money to cover membership fees and commute cost but cant wait till then hahaa
