Two docs that I know say they are better for you feet. They did say you do have to build up to long runs due to the lack of cushioning. No different than conditioning your legs/body for muay thai.

I started barefoot running about a year ago due to crazy shin splints. I noticed when I was on the mat, no pain. So I started running barefoot, and even started working out barefoot. I was up to about 5 miles in about a month after going barefoot. I'm going to look into the five finger's, because my gym gives all the MMA guys grief for walking around barefoot and lifting barefoot.
IMO, barefoot is a million times better than shoes, but the five fingers seems like a decent compromise. Plus, they look pretty 21st century ninja-like.

get the kso, flow, trek, or bikila. imo, the the kso's are the best because they're cheaper than the other 3 models i suggested.
