Gi match that doesn't end quite how you might expect...

As I said, I respect the roots. But I also respect ancient sword fighting, in japan 1500 ad, it was the absolute most practical fighting style. There's a reason it's not practical anymore. Same with the gi. In 1800 Japan, everyone had on a kimono. Choking someone with that huge flap of cloth thats aleays guaranteed to he there was very practical. How many of you have used a double guard pull to a berimbolo joust, to a baseball choke variation in the street? How many of you have used any kinda gi choke in the street? I'm sure on YouTube you can find a guy choking a guy with his jacket.. I can also find a vid of someone doing a jump spin kick and getting a KO also, doesn't mean it's practical fighting.

I'm certain I upset someone, as I always do. I apologize ahead of time for the bashing I've earned by roweling up the gi guys.

firstly nice to see a finish, but i have to say i hate that double guard pull lets play footsies pant leg tug of war match until one of us gets a berimbolo. if the other person has already pulled guard just take it and work your top game

ScottRay, Practicality is circumstantial. Bjj is impractical against multiple opponents. You don't want to fight on the ground and you don't want to maintain guard if you're on your back. Boxing is impractical if you're on your back. Bjj is impractical if you can't take a guy down.

My point is that gi bjj is still very practical. Gi chokes may not always be available, but if someone knows it, why not? Al Bundy (I forget his real name) actually ended a real life confrontation with a gi choke using a guys shirt.

As far as hating double guard pulls and criticizing the realism, remember its a sport. Guys are playing by rules. Don't like? Don't watch. There's sport bjj, mma bjj, and self defense bjj. Criticizing sport bjj for its impracticality doesn't make a whole lotta sense.

I just say, respect it for what it is. It's from that that we came from. But in the end, you're 100% entitled to your opinions and preferences. I'm just adding some perspective to consider cuz I think gi hate is unmerited.

Also I would like to make it clear I'm not hating on the Gi or guard pulling either. just the moment when one person has already pulled guard and you choose to do the exact same thing. And I get that people have their own styles, evolution of the sport, etc, etc. But it is a move that a lot of people find unappealing and how will this affect it, will it stay a major part of the sport or will it fade away?

double guard and berimbolos are a part of the sport, and have nothing to do with self defense. Shit you see berimbolos and dobule guard in no-gi too. Gi and nogi aren't as different as people like to think.

Cool vid, but the gi is unrealistic.. double guard pull to a berimbolo joust, then choking a guy that has your back...gi is so not interesting. It's as impractical as watching people arm wrestle..

Street fight with no grips is just as unrealistic. SOOO impractical. It's like you can take elements of both sports or something and incorporate them into self-defense. Intredesting.

I wouldnt say the gi is impractical. Yes you wouldnt double guard pull into a berimbolo situation in a street fight but would you play any sort of guard in a street fight for an extended amount of time? I sure wouldnt be using any sort of rubber guard just like I wouldnt be using a berimbolo in a street fight.
Gi, no gi, its all jiu jitsu and there shouldnt be this weird separation that seems to be splitting the two. Onward and upward.
