Keep it off of the ground, unless you are positive no one else is going to join in and stomp your head in!!!

if it were a one on one fight if i ended up on the ground i'd use rubberguard for sure, most people that dont know what is going on will start to panic even if their on top.
hold them close and chances are they wanna push away to get some swingin room.

I say, good punch between the eyes or in the nose to make their eyes water, a real good open palm to the ear, then have a field day.
they cant see and their equilibrium is screwed. wanna be mean, jab em in the throat. after the ear and eyes/nose is taken care of.

I have been jumped before and was able to talk the guys out of it, so I am a big supporter of using your words to diffuse the situation.

But if it ever happened where multiple guys were attacking me, I would go straight for the Kimora. A choke takes way too long to take someone out especially when there is more than one attacker. Break their arm/tear their shoulder and move onto the next one. If your on the ground getting kicked, 50-50 then heel hook and tear their knee if you can.

As beautiful as RG is in 1v1, it's only good vs 1v1. You could totally be dominating a guy on the ground in 1v1, but his buddy, however unskilled in combat, gets free field goal kicks to your head/back/side. Avoid the ground in a street fight. Avoid street fights altogether. Even if you're a black belt in 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu and are a Muay Thai Kru, skill won't stop bullets, knives and it's random what type of attacker you have on your hands during an altercation. Is he armed? Does he have backup nearby? What's his mental state? Street combat isn't playtime. People die in those type of altercations. I don't want any of my 10PJJ family ending up hurt or worse on the news because of a street fight that could be avoided with using

    1. Awareness: keep eyes out for things/people out of place in your environment and know when you're more vulnerable to attack ie. Dark parking garage with no other people
This is probably your most important defense and your 1st line of defense.

    2. Buddy System: *not always possible, but it's just a great habit to always be with a friend. Plus isn't it more fun to have someone to shoot the shit with while doing your daily grind?*

Just having those two up makes you a MUCH harder target. So in short, the best way to defend yourself is to never get into a fight in the 1st place.

Now of course, if you've exhausted your verbal judo altercation diffusion skills in a potential fight, and physical violent is imminent.
*worst case scenario, and your "run away* option is being stifled by the environment or multiple attackers surrounding you, someone has to go down*

    Eye Jab
    Groin Kick
Then follow ups with w/e comes natural combat wise.
Don't stop attacking till the assailant is completely incapacitated and unable to recover/retaliate long enough for you to escape.

If you're lucky and your opponents don't have ranged weapons, take the *run away* option as soon as you see/feel an opening to get to a more crowded/safer area.

I hope that none of us is faced with that type of situation. I've been in that type of situation once. I've seen what a metal baton *the kind with the weighted ball on the end of it* can do to someone's face and skull.

By training jiujitsu you are improving your grappling skills tremendously. This means you have the skill and physical attributes to keep a fight standing, on the ground or in the clinch against an average attacker who is not a submission grappler himself. Use your skills such as stepping out of the way, pummel in the clinch to get underhooks and push away and sprawl to keep your feet under you so you can bolt out of there as soon as possible. I would do that even if there is no one around since even if you "win" a street fight, there is always the chance of you getting in trouble with the law etc.. Imagine this, if you managed to not to be in a plane which crashes, you never have to worry about how to "win" in a plane crash and not die. So you not being there in a street fight, meaning you got away, you are at home with no scratches on you and no cops are looking for you to see if you breaking that guys arm or choking him unconsicois was self defence or over aggression and you do not have to deal with court process and looking over your shoulder constantly in bars to see if the guys you fought 3 days ago are looking for your with knives in their pockets, than you have truly won that fight. If fighting is not avoidable then the best option are some judo hip throws, they are simple, quick, put your opponent on the floor, drives the air out of their lungs, if done on a hard surface against someone who is not experienced in getting thrown, they inflict a good amount of damage and they still let you stay upright with the ability to run or take on another attacker.
