So I started doing jiu jitsu in 2008 at the same school I train at now (10P Santa Fe, under Tait Fletcher). When I first started (at first, a cardio boxing class just to get in shape, jits about a month later), I smoked a pack a day and was, to be blunt, a fat piece of shit. Over the past 5 years, I've been fortunate enough to be a part of a community that's always striving to be better, in every regard, and have been educated on what real fitness and health is. That's one of the reasons I love our school so much- there's a heavy emphasis on overall athleticism. I really think it's safe to say that at Santa Fe, we're at the forefront of REAL health and fitness. Anybody who listens to Tait's podcast or has listened to him on Rogan's can attest to that.
My jits game is significantly better if I'm in better shape overall. And that's going to be true for every single person. I've rolled with plenty of dudes who may have had some better technique than me but I came out on top because I was good enough at defending and eventually they gassed and I submitted them. Doesn't take a genius to know that in a battle of physicality, being stronger, faster, more powerful, more flexible, more agile, and having more endurance is going to give me the edge in the battle.
The point of all this is that twice a year, we participate in an 8 week challenge (called the Whole Life Challenge) all about taking your health and fitness level to the next step. You start off with a baseline workout and measurements and then follow the rules of the challenge for the next 8 weeks. The rules are this, you eat what's allowed on the challenge, don't eat what's not, take fish oil every day, get at least 10 minutes of exercise every day, 10 minutes of mobility (stretching), and then there's a category that changes every two weeks. You get a certain number of points each day for each category. Every day you log onto a website and log your points for the day before. At the end of the 8 weeks, you take the measurements and do the workout again and your improvement in those areas combined with your online score will make up your score for the challenge overall. The challenge costs $40 to register. If you want to do it, you'll sign up under our gym and in the past, we've usually given out $100 to our friends and family winner. (ie: not a member of our gym).
I've been a CrossFit coach for 3 years and did my first Whole Life Challenge last fall. And I can honestly say it was nothing short of life changing. My mood, attitude, health, body fat %, CrossFit, and jiu jitsu were all incredibly better. (In the last WLC I lost 2 inches off my waist and increased my baseline workout score by 34 reps in an 11 minute workout consisting of an 800 meter run, 50 sit ups, 75 squats, and 100 push ups)
Here are a before and after picture of myself and Tait from the last WLC (this past spring)
Jiu jitsu is really about taking yourself outside your comfort zone so it shouldn't be too hard for a community of badasses like I know all you 10P warriors to be to take on a challenge like this. You could take your badassedness up a notch. You definitely aren't going to take it backwards.
And tell ya what, we can make a little side bet within our group of 10th Planet, too. Whoever wins among the 10P guys, I'll send a 10P Santa Fe t-shirt and shorts, too..... As long as you beat me.
If you're interested, I'm more than happy to answer any questions. If you want to do it, registration begins on August 1st. The prelims are on Sep 7th. You can register under 10th Planet Santa Fe (Undisputed Fitness) by clicking this link----> https://www.wholelifechallenge.com/w...isputedfitness
What do you have to lose? Besides fat?
