If you do more than just jiujitsu, meaning takedowns, kickboxing, any of it.. You need a cup. Barncat and I have an agreement at 10th planet Beaumont, if someone shows up without a cup, he's repping knee slice passes in jiujitsu and inside leg kicks in my kickboxing class! Lol. It's protective equipment. You may no like it, but its there for a reason.. Plus it's our gym rules.. Don't like it? There's a Gracie barra down the street..

I see your cup and mouthpiece like I see a seatbelt. 99.99% of the time you don't need it. But that 0.01% spit second you do need it, it's the most important thing in the world at that moment. I wear my seatbelt.. Just sayin.

I like to make things as awkward as possible for all parties involved.

Your first week of class it may be awkward or "gross" having something bulging and hard on your partner down there (cup). Later on tho, the soft squishy down there grosses me out. I know it was your junk and not a cup.. Yuck. I hate visiting gyms that are no cups. It's so gross... And the whole time they bitch about my cup smashing into their back.. Every time I get a complaint about my cup digging in someone's back, I reply with " I'm not wearing a cup" as I wink at them..

All I wear is one of those purple Crown Royal sacks with the draw string...and nothing else (no shorts, no shirt, etc.). Doesn't provide much protection, but it looks super awesome!

This is from the NAGA No-Gi Rules pdf http://www.nagafighter.com/pdf/2013_naga_rules.pdf on their website. The only reason I checked is because I was considering it as a Tournament series to try out for my competition and always check Rules before entering.

-At a minimum, a groin protector (male competitors), mouthpiece, and shorts with a drawstring must be worn. Because fingers and toes can get caught and injured, no pockets or zippers are allowed on the shorts.

Regardless, I like to train in what I am planning to compete in, including mouthguard and clothes. That way there is no surprises or discomfort on competition day.

Wow lots of different view on this subject. As yall know Cora competes and trains just as much as anyone on here and to this date she has never smash anyone's nutts. The knee slice is one of her best guard pass. On the other side, she was also a victim of an armbar gone wrong. The boy didnt have an armbar but decided to use his huge cup to smash her forearm anyways. This took her out of the game for almost 3 weeks. Depending on what kind of a person you are, a cup can be use as a sheild or as a weapon. You know how easy would be if Cora has a cup on and triangle someone?

Jock strap w/ cup, compressions shorts (spats and/or shorts), always. JJ, MMA, or just training.
