It's the flaw of the belt system. People like recognition and labels. You want to be the Purple or the 3 Strip Brown. I get that, we love to have achievements recognized. Ultimately your skills speak for themselves. This guy was possibly so caught up in what color a belt was he went to another school and got promoted. If that's what went down, I don't blame the instructor for demoting him. A students goal should simply be to train hard and improve his or her skills. If that wasn't the case, if it was about trying to shame another school like somebody mentioned, then those instructors are pretty much worthless.
